Description

Zealand Birds is a danish cross stitch sampler containing two-coloured motifs. This was called “Skovbo sewing” and had its only peak in the mid-19th century before almost disappearing. The referance “Skovbo” meant it was tribute to the woodland areas of Zealand, Denmark. As the people who didn’t live in the wooded areas traditionally used the tecnique of Hedebo stitches.

We often see “redwork” in Scandinavia and part of Nordic embroidery as it presumably was the easiest colour to dye. Which is why it’s extraordinarly fun to come across something with a setcolour like blue.
You can naturally stitch this in whatever colourcombination you like. By using bold colours you might even modernize an otherwise antique / vintage appearance.

This pattern comes in two varieties. First pattern is the top bird motif with various borders. All in two-tone style.
The second pattern as displayed on picture 2 comes with poetry quote from John Keats.

Thread estimate is aprox. two skeins of each colour for each pattern.
